The Casual Vacancy

The Casual Vacancy

JK Rowling’s first adult novel released in 2012 is now a 3-part BBC One and HBO mini-series. At the directorial helm is Jonny Campbell (Alien Autopsy, Eric & Ernie) and the screenplay is by Sarah Phelps.

Set to be aired on February 15th on BBC one, American fans of J.K. Rowling will have to wait until April to see this highly anticipated, small screen adaptation on HBO. In a post-Harry Potter era, it is very interesting to see how J.K. Rowling’s story telling fares out in this book-to-TV translation, but with so many followers, the 3-part miniseries should have a very successful run.

The Casual Vacancy is a dark tale of betrayal, treachery, drugs, prostitution, pornography, domestic squabbles, and class wars, set in a in a rustic, fictional English village called Pagford. There is a large ensemble cast, headed by no less than Albus Dumbledore himself, Sir Michael Gambon as Howard Mollison, the parish council chair. Julia McKenzie plays his overly ambitious wife, Shirley Mollison.

The novel has a hefty amount of characters which is a good thing actually, as Campbell can bank on Julia McKenzie, Emilia Fox, Keeley Hawes, and Simon McBurney to breathe life into Rowling’s colourful cast of characters.

Filmed at several idyllic, suburban areas, expect to see lush greeneries in Northleach, the ancient cobble-stoned market in Minchinhampton, the rolling fields in Painswick and sleepy villages in and around Gloucester.
