Meet Will: The Newest Member of Our Camera Hire Team

We’re excited to welcome a new face to the Aimimage camera hire team — Will, who brings with him a huge amount of rental experience, a deep love for lenses, and a filmmaking journey that started long before he ever stepped into a kit room.

We sat down with Will for a quick Q&A to learn more about his background, what makes him tick, and what he’ll be bringing to Aimimage (as well as what he would bring to a desert island).

Can you tell us a bit about your background in film/production and what brought you into the world of camera hire?

From a young age, I was always interested in cinema, and my love of cameras and technology developed when I started to skate as a teenager.

My friends and I first started to film each other on a friend’s dad’s old HI-8 camera – that’s where it all began. I then studied Film & Video at the ‘Surrey Institute of Art & Design’. During my time at Uni, I went on a few snowboard trips and I got hooked – as soon as I graduated, I moved out to the Alps and proceeded to spend the next 6 years snowboarding and making Snowboard films. One summer between the winter seasons, I got a job as a runner in a kit room and soon realised this was where I belonged. I have now worked in Rental for 16 years.

What part of camera tech or production workflows are you most nerdy about?

Definitely Lenses – to me, these are the most fascinating part of the business.

You get one dream camera setup, money no object, what’s on the trolley?

For nostalgia, it would have to be a Sony VX2000 with a Century Fish Eye or a Bolex 16mm camera…

We love that, a true throwback setup. There’s something special about the look and feel of those classics.

If you weren’t in this industry at all, what would you probably be doing instead?

Living in the middle of nowhere – off-grid and happy!

And hopefully documenting your nomad life with a Sony VX2000!

What will you be bringing to the team day-to-day?

Depth of knowledge, experience and most of all a calm persona and a can-do attitude.

We all know snowboarders are the surfers of the mountains, so your calm and can-do attitude is a given.

What part of the job are you most looking forward to?

Being part of a bigger team and having more equipment resources available for my clients’ needs

What’s on your playlist for days at the office?

A bit of French dub or some Thievery Corporation.

Top 3 films of all time?

Once Upon In A Time In America
The Wire (not a film, but…)
2001: Space Odyssey

Cheating is absolutely allowed for The Wire.

Favourite director and what you love about their work?

Wes Anderson – love his storytelling, scripts and his Kubrick framing symmetry.

What three items are you taking to a desert island?

A ghetto blaster, a Trangia and some tea bags.

What could be better than enjoying island life with Thievery Corporation blasting and a cup of tea in hand (assuming you agree it’s bag first, then milk).

We’re Thrilled to Have Will on Board

Will’s background in rental, his love of lenses, and his calm, solution-focused approach make him a perfect fit for the Aimimage hire team. If you’re booking kit with us, there’s a good chance you’ll be speaking with him soon, and you’ll be in very good hands.
