The Portrait of a Boxer
Directors Edward Lovelase and James Hall were thinking about this project for a while and now seems to be the best time for making a short film about this particular kickboxer, who was about to have the biggest fight of his life at the Bolton Arena.
The film follows his journey from a gentle, understated young man to a focused physical force who seeks to break away from his shy persona and embrace his dream of becoming one of the most feared fighters in the UK.
Greg learned kickboxing at the age of 17 in an East London gym where he quickly recognized that the spirit, rituals and morals that lie at the core of kickboxing mirrored his own approach to life and family. To Greg there was a respect and loyalty between fighters that didn’t seem to exist in any other sport.
”I opened my wings and I become a butterfly and, for a moment I was able to fly away”.
One of the inspirations for the film was the feature documentary they made themselves called ”The Possibilities are Endless” which was also shot on the 35 mm format. The film is playing in the documentary competition of the 2014 BFI London Film Festival. That film received a 5 star reviews in The Guardian upon its world premiere at SXSW 2014 in Austin, Texas.

The Amazing 35mm Penelope Camera
As the film is about memory, identity and told within a dreamscape environment, it is more suitable to shoot in a non-typical documentary style. The 35mm format allowed for that.
Aimimage’s Penelope camera was perfect for a documentary crew working in a non-documentary style. It’s very light weight and easy to manoeuvre, so you can get great results on the move.
